LE DESSEIN

The project “LE DESSEIN” born from the discovery of 10 polaroids in which my mother Laura and I, are portrayed. Some of them shows our first moments at the hospital, when we first sought a bond. The compositions, in which the photos are inserted, are six and different: whole, broken, smooth or wavy glass.

#frombrusselstoitalyarchive project is my family's photo archive from 50's till now. This artwork is the result of my own daily exercise by which I try to get in touch with my native country, Belgium.
My purpose is to create a different memory from the original one through a new photo shoot of every pic to underline something up overshadowed by the time. I seize my family's collective memory to create a more personal and deep one. The treatment of every photograph depends on its subject and my relationship with it. Some pictures are covered by a tissue paper or cropped to highlight details. Sometimes I change colors or lighting if the atmosphere and the subject of the pictures inspire me. The project is on Instagram using the hashtag #frombrusselstoitalyarchives.

This artwork is an archive from '60 and '70 post ceremony pictures.
After first communion's and confirmation's rituals, the subjects were photographed in different poses in a studio.
These pictures were given as a present to their relatives invited at the Mass. Each of the family is sent to choose among several pictures, both different in format, size, frames and colors, in order to find the one which could identify the subject better. This Belgian tradition represented a sign of affection for many decades.
I try to continue this ceremonial cutting out my ceremonials pictures with the purpose to stand in the same frames and finally find a sense of belonging.
